On the Fourth of Februrary at 5:20 my wife delivered our second little boy. We named him Henry Scofield Thomas. He weighs 7lb. 3oz. and is 20in. Mom and baby are home now, with Michal recovering from a C-section. Kimball will be two in March. I am one year away from obtaing my doctorate of chiropractic and we are looking for a good place to live. Any suggestions? By the way, Satchiko, I remember you, how are you doing? Hope all is well for everyone, Jared - - - - - - - -

Dear Beloved Missionaries Journal/letter # 125
In this world where there seem to be more and more disagreement and declarations of war we find a peace and love here in our mission as we are engaged in the work of the Lord. We are thankful for the ?normality of life? that we are enjoying.
We have just returned from Ufa. We left Friday night about 6:30 and drove to Chelyabinsk (about a two hour drive) where we got on the train. (We learned last year that the month of January is not really the best time to try to drive on Russian roads especially if it involves crossing the Ural Mountains crest.) The trip though safer takes about 14 hours if we drive to Chelyabinsk. If we go by train from Yekaterinburg it usually takes 18 hours. By van the time is 7-8 hours, which makes it the way to travel if the weather allows. It also provides local transport when we arrive which is also a substantial advantage.
We had compartments for two and arrived in Ufa about 7:00 am Saturday. The two office sisters went with us to do audits of branch and district financial records. One of the assistants went to help with Zone Leader training and Victor did the Fireside Saturday evening. Marc was in meetings or interviews all day on Saturday starting at 10:30 and was a few minutes late for the fireside which began at 6 pm. Many of the Elders asked why we didn?t have a Zone Conference as they look to them for a spiritual lift. We were glad to hear their reason, but were unable to do the conference because of time constraints. We arrived home this morning in time to be a little late for the first branch?s classes but were able to make the next branch?s sacrament meeting and then the first branch?s. Is that confusing, or what? Anyway, we did get to take the sacrament and that?s what counts. The missionaries in Ufa are all doing very well, and it was nice to hear that they do enjoy meeting with us.
The theme for the fireside was President Hinckley?s statement that every member needs a ?friend, calling and nourishing by the good word.? It went very well and there were between 60 and 70 young adults in attendance?very few older than 30. It was one of the best-attended firesides we have had in Ufa.
When we left the temperature here was ?29 C in Yekaterinburg, and when we returned it had risen to only a ?2 C. We were absolutely delighted. It is snowing right now, but snow is preferable to the cold. It was raining in Ufa Saturday night after the fireside.
Next week Elder Orton from the Area Presidency will be here. He is going to dedicate the new Perm meetinghouse. That is exciting for everyone! It will be the first dedicated building in our mission. We are still trying to get things sorted out in Ufa on our building there so it can be dedicated. Our accountant has been in Ufa all this last week working on utilities. Moscow is still working on the legal side.
We still haven?t water here at home, but we are hopeful soon. Life is good; people in the community around us are still very helpful and continue to want to help us in any way they can. The market close to us greets us and reaches out in service. At the store across the street they know us and greet us in friendliness. Of course, the members are wonderful. We haven?t anything to complain about. The Lord is in the heavens and is watching out for us and for our missionaries.
