I got a letter from Kolya Ustyuzhaninov yesterday and so I'll post it up so you can see how he is doing on his mission in Rostov
Hello Gairechik,
What's up!
How is life? Everything is good with me. In a month I will be on my mission for a year! Horrible! Missionary work continues to move forward, soon we will have a baptism. We love to teach these people.
In our Branch there are 120 people, but 70-80 come, sometimes more. How did you celebrate Christmas and New Years? We had a lot of fun. Our District - 13 missionaries - we all got together and watched "Tarzan" and ate. At 12pm it sounded like there was a war out on the street! The whole sky was filled with Fireworks! It was fun! How is life in Canada?
It's great that you haven't forgotten the Russian language and that you write me. That's good that you continue to do missionary work! It is the best work.
I can't believe that in March in Perm will be a Church building! It's so cool. It is such a big blessing.
Again thank you, with love, your brother, Elder Nikolai Ustyuzhaninov

I found an interesting article on the web:
Thursday February 1 10:45 AM ET Million Dollar Win Leaves Woman Stunned
MOSCOW (Reuters) - An unemployed former Russian factory worker who won a
million dollars in a lottery seemed at a loss to know what she would do with
the biggest payout the country has seen. Outside of the business elite, a
million dollars is an astronomical amount for Russia. A large proportion of
the population live on the bread line and the average wage is around $50 a
month. ``I have a husband and two kids...we're a normal family,'' said
Nadezhda Mukhamyetzianova, from the obscure Urals town of Ufa, who has been
out of work for several years, after winning the prize in the ``Bingo-Show''
lottery. She giggled nervously Wednesday when asked at a news conference
what she intended to do with her winnings, and only managed to comment:
``I've worked in a factory all my life -- we were building Communism.''
``You're one of the rich now,'' one journalist said. ``She could buy the
whole factory and sack the boss,'' added another. - - - - - - - -

Just thought I would tell you about some of the things that my son says are happening in Yekat. He says that they finally got their building done - and it is way cool. Now they have a place to meet, play sports, and all the other stuff. He says that Pres. Hall sais that Elder Packer is going over for about a month. Probably in February some time. Everybody seems to be excited about forming a stake. They had a conference and Pres. Hall proposed it to the congregation and asked all of the members who were willing to support this endeavor to stand up. My son said that most everybody stood up. He then committed to bringing in a bunch of missionaries to help accomplish this. My son says that they have had a lot more people going to the temple. He loves what he is doing - as I'm sure all of you alumni did also. He has passed his hump day and says that it has gone by way too fast. I guess alot of you felt the same way. As mothers, it seems like it will be forever, and all of the sudden you look at the calendar and realize a year has passed. It is strange. I know he is happy. I am so proud of all of you who have gone before and are going now. What a committment and blessing it is for you to have in your lives. Do svidania. - - - - - - - -

Hello:)
I received my call to the Yekat mission last Wed.! Horaay! I'm really excited. I'll enter the Provo MTC on May 2 so I'll be seeing all of you around....hmmm....July or so. Well, to the point, I've got three months to work on the language, so I'm looking for some good tapes and books to learn from. Any suggestions? I don't want to buy a book or something if it's going to be used in the MTC. Also, I've noticed a lot of posting asking for good boot brands. Email me some of those reply's too:)!!! I've got to start looking for that stuff. One more question, as for a backpack, how many cubic meters/feet would be appropriate. Thanks! Poka? ( I don't know what that means, I just saw someone else use it.) - - - - - - - -

I tried to purchase the boots David Halls recommended, but they were all out. Can any of you recommend a particular brand of boot you used that worked for you? Is it better to buy leather ones that look a little more dressy or should I just go for the warmest galosh type I can find? Please help!!
